It is highly recommended for women to take a supplement of cod liver oil during pregnancy and lactation. This is because cod liver oil is rich in Vitamin D and the essential fatty acid DHA.
Vitamin D is necessary for the uptake of calcium and thus optimal skeletal development.
The omega 3 fatty acid DHA is important for optimal development of the brain, nervous system and vision of the foetus. The reason for this is that DHA is found in rich amounts in brain cells and in the retina of the eye (the part of the eye which response to light), and is hence essential for the brain and vision function.
The amount of omega 3 fatty acids that is transferred to the foetus through the placenta depends on the mother’s diet. It is therefore important that the mother has a sufficient intake of omega 3 fatty acids both before and during her pregnancy.
We recommend that you take Möller’s Cod Liver Oil or Möller’s Extra Liquid which are rich in omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA and vitamins D, A and E. The daily recommended intake of 5 ml (tablespoon) will cover your daily need for 1 g of omega 3, as recommended by health authorities.
If you do not like the taste of cod liver oil, Möller’s Dobbel or Möller’s Anti-reflux are good alternatives.
