Recommended omega 3 intake

To achieve the beneficial health effects from an omega 3 product, it is vital that it contains enough of the best documented omega 3 fatty acids from marine sources. These are called EPA and DHA. 

Norwegian Health Authorities recommend that you receive between 1-2 g omega 3 daily. Scientific studies show that a person needs 1 g of marine omega 3 daily to obtain the beneficial health effects. 1 tablespoon (5 ml) of Möller’s Cod Liver Oil contains 1.2 g of omega 3 from fish, of which 1 g is DHA and EPA combined.

Recommendations from authorities

At present, there is no universally established guideline for daily consumption of omega 3 due to e.g. variations in diet from country to country. However, in most Western countries there are recommendations relating to omega 3 intakes due to the documented beneficial health benefits. Several international organizations and government agencies have therefore made recommendations for omega 3 in general and DHA and EPA specifically. Below is a list of various recommendations: 

Norwegian Health Authorities - The Norwegian Health Authorities recommend a daily intake of 1-2g omega 3 for adults. 

ISSFAL (International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids)  – Recommends a minimum daily intake of 500mg of EPA and DHA combined for healthy adults and for cardiovascular health. 

UK SACN (Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition) – Recommends the equivalent of 450mg marine omega 3 daily and an increase in population oily fish consumption to one portion a week. 

American Heart Association – Recommends that everybody should eat at least 2 servings (ca. 230g) of oily fish per week (fish high in DHA and EPA). People with heart disease should consume min of 1 g of marine omega 3 a day. People with high triglyceride levels should consume 2-4g EPA+DHA per day. 

FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) - Recommends a total dietary intake of omega 3 fatty acids from fish up to 3 grams per day. 

”To ensure a sufficient intake of vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids, cod liver oil is recommended for the entire population”.
